The Guards is a collaborative artwork by me and artist Machteld Aardse my background in film and photography, and Aardse, who comes from a drawing and painting background, explored the role of security guards in society. Art is about questioning everyday reality, and we examined how security is playing an increasingly significant and complex role both in society and within the art world.
The work was also inspired by the architecture of the Amsterdam Courthouse. We worked together with the security staff and various employees of the courthouse.
The Guards was displayed during the group exhibition 1en1is1 at Arti et Amicitiae organised by Anne Verhoijsen en Jos Houweling, Rokin 112, 1012 LB Amsterdam, from May 18 to June 16, 2024, as well as during Art Week Amsterdam.
